When will the hotel renovation take place?

- A February 2026 hotel closure is planned to complete back-of-house upgrades to electrical systems and kitchen infrastructure and maintain compliance with city code.

- La Fiesta Lounge and the hotel lobby will be refreshed February - May 2026.
- 165 guest rooms will receive new furnishings and fixtures in late 2026 (last updated in 2014).

What will the renovations entail?

The planned upgrades to the Hotel include the following:

Historic Guest Rooms (excluding Terrace Rooms)
- Applying new paint.
- Refinishing concrete floors and replacing carpeted rooms with hardwood floors.
- Installing new case goods and millwork.
- Adding new soft seating and mattresses.
- Upgrading bathroom fixture and lighting.
- Installing additional electrical outlets.
- Adding new artwork.

Public Space & Kitchen
- Refreshing guest corridors, including lighting, paint, and flooring.
- Enlarging the lobby bar to improve operational flow and increase seating capacity.
- Updating and reworking the kitchen to replace obsolete equipment and improve workflow.
- Updating the lobby furniture and finishes, including the front desk and concierge areas.
- Renovating the public restrooms on the first floor.
- Installing permanent shade structures at the Bell Tower Rooftop Bar and replacing flooring in the landing area.
- Upgrading the elevator mechanical systems and cab interiors.
- Repairing the Terrace patio and expansion joints.
- Converting the executive offices to a new Presidential Suite.
- Replacing the main electrical distribution panel and the kitchen electrical panels, as well as installing new kitchen flooring that will fix drainage issues.

Planned upgrades will focus on maintaining La Fonda’s hospitality standards, ensuring guest comfort and safety, and preserving the hotel’s rich history.
Recent updates: La Plazuela’s dining chairs were replaced with more functional furnishings that improve service flow. The previous chairs were sold to the owner of historic La Posada in Winslow, Arizona, for refurbishing and reuse.
No additional guest-facing renovations are confirmed; updates will be communicated as plans are finalized.

- Renovation plans are designed to balance the needs of modern travelers with the responsibility of maintaining a landmark property.
- La Fonda’s treasured art collection and historically significant architectural features will remain intact and further highlighted to showcase important design elements and works.
- Ownership commissioned a comprehensive survey of the building to better understand its architectural evolution of the property. The results serve as a guide to identify the historically significant elements of the hotel that should be protected or enhanced.
- Ownership hired Architectural Historian, John Murphy, to conduct an in-depth study of La Fonda’s lobby, public spaces and executive suite; the study evaluated and documented the significance, current condition, historical relevance and primary character-defining features of the interior spaces, including furnishings and light fixtures.
