When: July 14, 2023 | 2-4PM

Santa Fe, New Mexico - La Fonda on the Plaza is thrilled to announce a free public event that will transport attendees back in time to the captivating era of the Manhattan Project. On July 14, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, La Fonda will host a film and history talk centered around the renowned project and its impact on the local community. This talk will take place at the historic La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The highlight of the event will be a discussion on the intriguing film project, "The House at Otowi Bridge," which chronicles the remarkable story of Edith Warner and the building of the atomic bomb. Producers of the film, plus Bruce Gelfand, the screenwriter, will be present to share their insights and delve into the captivating narrative.

In addition to the discussion regarding the film’s production, the audience will have the privilege of hearing from local resident Ellen Bradbury Reid, who grew up in Los Alamos, a key site of the Manhattan Project. Ellen’s firsthand experiences will provide a fascinating glimpse into life in New Mexico before, during, and after this transformative chapter. Joining her will be esteemed scientists and historians from both the Los Alamos and San Ildefonso Pueblo communities, who will further shed light on the profound impact the Manhattan Project had on everyone who resided in the area at that time.

La Fonda’s Hotel Historian, Ed Pulsifer, will also share interesting stories about the hotel’s relationship to the scientists and government agents that frequented the iconic property during this dynamic period.

Attendees will have the chance to indulge in the signature Oppenheimer Martini while talking with fellow history enthusiasts.

La Fonda on the Plaza encourages guests to arrive early as this event is expected to draw a significant crowd. While no tickets are necessary for entry, it is important to note that the event was standing room only last year, highlighting the tremendous interest surrounding this dynamic conversation.

"We are delighted to bring together this amazing group of individuals to explore the historical significance of the Manhattan Project and the story of Edith Warner and her profound influence on New Mexico," said Ed Pulsifer, Director of Sales and Hotel Historian at La Fonda on the Plaza. "Through this film and history talk, we aim to provide an engaging and educational experience for all attendees, fostering a deeper understanding of our region's past."
